Driver dies at V&A Waterfront as Bakkie drives off a pier.

Cape Town - A man died on Sunday afternoon after the bakkie he was driving veered off a pier at the V&A Waterfront, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

His passenger managed to swim to safety.

Two helicopter pilots jumped into the water to try to rescue the men. NSRI’s Table Bay commander Pat van Eyssen said the incident happened just after 3pm.

“On arrival… it was confirmed that a vehicle, believed to be a Waterfront maintenance bakkie, had gone over the pier into the water on the sea side of East Pier at the V&A Waterfront.

“Two people were reportedly in the vehicle at the time, both males. The passenger was able to get out of the vehicle and get to shore and he is being attended to for shock and he has been checked out by paramedics.”

Van Eyssen said the passenger had not been injured, but the driver was declared dead at the scene.

“It is not clear what caused the vehicle to go over the pier and into the water. The body of the deceased will be handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services. Efforts are under way to secure the vehicle and then today a crane will be brought in to recover the vehicle from the water.”

Two pilots, Howard Curran and JD Heyns, from Cape Town Helicopters, based at the Waterfront, were among the first on the scene and jumped into the water to try and save the men.

Curran described how he and his colleague jumped into the water after realising that someone could have been trapped in the bakkie.

“There was first a bit of confusion if there was someone in the bakkie or not, JD continued to undress and jumped into the water and cracked a window open and I jumped in and we managed to unlock the door.”

Curran said there was one person on top of the bakkie when they arrived, but he was not sure if it was the passenger: “We got one person out of the car and gave him over to ER24. We didn’t make much of it at first, but when we realised someone could be inside it got a bit serious to us.”

V&A Waterfront spokeswoman Carla White said the circumstances of the incident would be investigated.

“Concern is for his family at this time and our full support will be offered. Counselling has also been offered to his co-workers to offer support.”

She said the family had not yet been notified and that the victim’s name would be released once that had been done.

An inquest docket has been opened by the police.

Tragic brothers scrubbing out pet shop owner's serpent cage of the 14ft python that killed them. UPDATED!!

Updated!

Ontario - A four-metre-long African rock python which strangled two young Canadian boys as they slept has been euthanised, police said on Tuesday, as authorities examined what happened and why the snake - illegal in the province of New Brunswick - attacked.

Noah and Connor Barthe, aged 4 and 6, died early on Monday after the 45kg snake escaped from its glass cage through a ventilation shaft, slithered through ductwork and crashed through the ceiling into the room where they were sleeping.

Police have launched a criminal investigation into the two deaths, which prompted headlines in Canada and beyond and sparked questions about rules on keeping exotic pets.

“It's a criminal investigation because two young boys lost their lives,” Alain Tremblay, a sergeant with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, told a news conference.

He said it would take time to gather evidence to present to a prosecutor.

The boys were at a sleepover at the apartment, above the Reptile Ocean exotic pet store in Campbellton, a city of about 7 500 people in Canada's maritime province of New Brunswick.

Initial reports said the snake escaped from the store into the residence, but police said on Tuesday it was being held in a glass enclosure in the same apartment as the two children.

“(The enclosure) went right up to the ceiling, but inside there was a small hole that was connected to the ventilation system,” said Tremblay.

Police did not address the legality of keeping the python in a private residence. But a provincial spokeswoman confirmed that the African rock python is not a permitted species in New Brunswick.

In a brief statement carried live on Canadian television, Dave Rose, the boys' great uncle, appealed for privacy to give the family time to mourn.

“They were two typical children. They enjoyed life to the maximum,” he said, his voice breaking with emotion.

Police said autopsies were being performed on both boys, who Rose said had spent the day before they died at a garden barbecue and then playing at a family farm.

One expert said African rock pythons do not normally view humans as food, adding that the snake must have been confused when it encountered the boys.

“A defensive attack, it would just be strike and release. They normally don't constrict what they're not going to eat,” said Bry Loyst, curator of the Indian River Reptile Zoo near Peterborough, Ontario, which has an African rock python on display.

The attack highlighted the lack of regulations governing exotic animals in private zoos and residences in most regions of Canada, he said.

“Potentially dangerous animals of any kind - whether it be tigers, lions, bears, cobras, rattlesnakes, large pythons - shouldn't be kept in a private residence. How do you do that?” Loyst asked.

While the circumstances of this attack were unusually shocking, python encounters have become somewhat common in North America, particularly in Florida, where exotic snakes abandoned in the wild have flourished in the near-tropical climate.

Officials in the state have estimated the population of Burmese pythons in the state as high as 150 000, and held a month-long hunt earlier this year to try to reduce that number. - Reuters

The pictures of the Connor and Noah Barth, age 4 and 6, in their underwear were posted on their mother's Facebook page. Mandy Trecartin (lower right) also posted a picture of the children sitting in a smaller glass cage. Jean-Claude Savoie kept an unknown number of massive reptiles in large glass cages at his pet shop and museum Reptile Ocean in Capbellton, New Brunswick, Canada, including the python, a large anaconda and several crocodiles, according to pictures on his Facebook page.

The Jackass Crew did it again - watch their new Trailer - Bad Grandpa

I am not ashamed to say that I love the Jackass movies. Yes, they are dumb. But some part of me cannot help but laugh at idiots falling down and hurting themselves. Their latest film, Bad Grandpa, is not like the three Jackass movies that came before it. This movie actually has a plot. A Borat-type endeavor in which Knoxville’s character is dropped into to the real world to engender real reactions.

This October, the signature Jackass character Irving Zisman (Johnny Knoxville) and Billy (Jackson Nicholl) will take movie audiences along for the most insane hidden camera road trip ever captured on camera.
